The GTA Explained

In short

The GTA, or General Terms of Agreement, is a voluntary framework between many credit hire providers and motor insurers. It sets agreed rates and processes for handling non-fault replacement vehicle charges, aiming to reduce disputes. It is industry-facing, and it does not change your right to go direct to an insurer.

§ 01What is the GTA?

The General Terms of Agreement is a voluntary industry framework used by many credit hire providers and insurers. It sets out agreed rates and timescales for handling non-fault replacement vehicle charges, with the aim of settling them more predictably and with fewer disputes.

It is an arrangement between businesses. You do not sign the GTA, and not every provider or insurer is a subscriber, but it often sits in the background of how charges are handled.

§ 02Why does the GTA matter to me?

Where a provider and the at-fault insurer both operate under the GTA, the rates and process for a replacement vehicle may follow the agreed framework, which can make the position more predictable. Where they do not, charges may be handled on a different basis.

None of this removes your options. You can still contact your own insurer or the at-fault insurer directly, free of charge, and you can ask a provider whether they operate under the GTA. For the cost side, see how much credit hire costs.

Common questions

Q1

Do I have to be part of the GTA?

No. The GTA is an agreement between providers and insurers, not something a consumer signs.

Q2

Does the GTA guarantee my charges are paid?

No. It is a framework that aims to reduce disputes, not a guarantee of recovery.

Q3

How do I know if it applies?

You can ask a provider whether they operate under the GTA and whether the at-fault insurer is a subscriber.
